“YoungArts gave me the confidence to be an artist. Working with Arquitectonica has confirmed this belief.” — YoungArts winner Yihui “Elvis” Zhang
The power of collaboration is transformative. In a summer internship program at international architecture, interior design and planning firm Arquitectonica, YoungArts winner Yihui “Elvis” Zhang worked alongside graduate-level interns to research, ideate and develop models that address a large-scale, human rights awareness initiative. Challenging his team to think beyond the physical space in ways that could engage and relate to potential audiences worldwide, Elvis explained how this work with Arquitectonica, YoungArts’ Design Arts Discipline Sponsor, helped deepen his understanding of the design process, and placed special emphasis on being deliberate and thoughtful at every juncture of the project.
Context, sustainability and exploring the intersections between science—a personal passion—and architecture were among the key breakthrough moments for Elvis. Also, being surrounded by other creatives and receiving mentorship and guidance in a collaborative environment were unique to his environment.
