Blog > Q and A with Tony Yazbeck: The 2017 YoungArts Backyard Ball

National YoungArts Week is just around the corner, which also means it is almost time for the annual YoungArts Backyard Ball in Miami. For the 2017 Backyard Ball, Tony Award-nominated actor, singer and dancer and 1997 YoungArts Winner in Theater Tony Yazbeck will direct a series of performance vignettes featuring YoungArts finalists and alumni throughout the night.
Thankfully, Tony had a few minutes to spare despite his busy schedule!
What are you currently working on? Please share some of your new projects.
I am hard at work on creating the best possible gala YoungArts has ever had right now. My upcoming projects include appearing at Lincoln Center on February 19, 2017 in a concert of Crazy For You starring as Bobby Child directed by Susan Stroman. I will also be appearing on the second season of Billions starting late February. I perform at Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony on March 10,2017.

You will direct the performance vignettes at the YoungArts Backyard Ball 2017. Can you give us a few hints at what to expect?
You can expect to see incredibly talented and authentic alumni artists collaborating together with their prospective artistic disciplines in a way that makes them vulnerable and also entertains in a hopeful and inspiring way.

As a master teacher at YoungArts, what is the most special moment during YoungArts Week to you and why?
The best moments for me come when all at once the students become the teachers and they inspire me right back to live a fuller and more meaningful life. These wonderfully gifted artists always encourage me to keep going even when I'm the one teaching them how to open up and share with the world their true artistic self.

What is your favorite memory as a YoungArts winner?
I really loved how inclusive YoungArts was to so many of my talented friends I went to school with. It gave so many of us a boost into the right direction.

What are you most looking forward to for YoungArts Week 2017?
I'm most looking forward to collaborating with my alumni and also meeting so many of the gifted winners that will be among us.
