Blog > Q&A with D’Angelo Lacy | YoungArts Awareness Day 2015

What do you do when there are TWO DAYS LEFT until YoungArts Awareness Day? Talk about Beyonce and Whoopi Goldberg. Here’s a 5-question chat we had with LA showcase director and YoungArts alum D’Angelo Lacy aka Black Gatsby (more- or equally-talented but not to be confused with THE D’Angelo, who does not have associations to YoungArts, unfortunately. Yet).

YoungArts: If your showcase had a grand group final number, what song would it be, and what props would you incorporate?

D'Angelo Lacy: The musical finale of the show would end with the song “Young Hearts Run Free” by Candi Staton and the props would be a combo of Umbrellas and hundreds of yellow rose pedals…“ideas…yeah, lets talk about ideas!” - Bill T. Jones

YA: Only using lyrics from Beyoncé (you can mix and match), describe the showcase you’re directing.

DL: Beyonce lyrics would definitely be Who Run the World (Girls)…now put ya hands UP!

YA: What’s your favorite YoungArts memory?

DL: For the welcome ceremony of artists at regionals YALA 2015, I performed an original song I wrote called “The Music” a cappella while 2009 winner in Dance Ryan Casey, tap danced to my song. I had an amazing time connecting/collaborating with such a lovely, open and extremely tall YoungArts alum, with so much talent and grace. That is one of many things I find common between all the young artists/alum I’ve met and worked with throughout this YoungArts family!

YA: Who would be your dream Master Teacher?

DL: Oprah, obviously.

YA: What artist or icon (dead or alive; pretending he/she was a teen when you were) do you wish had been your best friend at YoungArts Week, and what would you guys have talked about at snacks by the pool?

DL: Whoopi Goldberg is my number one and we would be discussing why they never made a Sister Act 3 and Ghost, the sequel. Plus how Jack from ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ when revealed, should’ve been a much sexier 'secret agent’ mystery lover played by Ryan Gosling or Idris Alba perhaps!

We are SO EXCITED to see the LA show, which is bringing together Voice and Dance alumni we always enjoy seeing perform. Be sure to RSVP for your FREE spot in the audience September 24th (we don’t come to LA often, so, really, RSVP and attend!), or check out what else you can do that day to celebrate YoungArts Awareness Day.
