On Saturday, November 5, 2016 YoungArts will premiere five short films commissioned in celebration of the organization’s 35th anniversary and created by groups of alumni from various disciplines, including Cinematic Arts, Dance, Design Arts, Jazz, Photography, Theater, Voice and Writing. This public world premiere will take place as part of Outside the Box on the YoungArts Plaza and will also feature live performances by “Transformations” participants Katy Short (2013 Winner in Dance) and Joseph Webb (1996 Winner in Dance & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts), as well as an artist talk.
The theme of “Transformations” draws parallels between the organization’s growth and evolution since its founding in 1981, and the critical formative period YoungArts Winners experience from adolescence to adulthood. Capturing the transformative power of creativity on film, the short films artfully explore a variety of topics such as self-reflection, nature, marginalization, loneliness, as well as police violence and racial injustice.
