Congratulations

Congratulations to all who participated in YoungArts Week, and a special nod to the 37 Gold and Silver Awardees who were adjudicated at the highest level of their peer group; they represent the top tier of talented young artists in the nation. They were selected as a result of their performances, readings and exhibitions at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, the Colony Theater, and the Margulies Collection at the WAREhOUSE during YoungArts Week. Many of them will go on to become Presidential Scholars in the Arts. For the first time ever, YoungArts live-streamed many YoungArts Week performances. If you missed them, or want to relive the experience, click here.

Next up for our Gold and Silver awardees: the annual week-long In the Studio/Out of the Studio experience in locations around New York City, where they will have additional artistic enrichment opportunities, including master classes with world-renowned artists, workshops and interdisciplinary activities April 9-16.

Message from the CEO

Dear Friends,

Every month this year, at the bottom of this newsletter, you’ll see the words, “Celebrating 30 years of discovering excellence in the arts.” That’s not just a slogan we added because it sounds good. Discovering excellence is the heart and soul of the YoungArts program.

With that in mind, we are embarking on a new era of broadening our reach and impact in regions and communities across the country. Not only are we looking to connect with talented high school students in the visual, literary and performing arts, but we seek to strengthen the bonds with our alumni – our personal examples of excellence in the arts. We want you to tell us where you are and what you’re up to, and whether you’d like to join us on our journey of discovering excellence in the arts.

Please drop me a line anytime. I’d love to hear from you.

Registration for YoungArts 2012 opens Tuesday, March 15. In the arts, the clock never stops ticking. As our community continues to grow each year, we all benefit.

It is our hope that you will be inspired by what you read here, or on our website, or through the numerous ways in which we communicate with you, including our new 30th Anniversary video. Join us this very special milestone year.

Sincerely,

Christina DePaul
President & CEO

Thank You for Your Support

We thank THE HISTORIC ALFRED I. DUPONT BUILDING for their support as presenting venue sponsor of the 2011 An Affair of the Arts Performance and Gala. We look forward to partnering with THE HISTORIC ALFRED I. DUPONT BUILDING again in the future as a venue host for other YoungArts programs and events.

The 17-story HISTORIC ALFRED I. DUPONT BUILDING was the first skyscraper constructed in Miami after the completion of the Dade County Courthouse in 1928, signaling the city’s economic recovery from the Great Depression. Opened on Christmas Day 1939, the building was designated an historic landmark in 1992.

Behind the Scenes
As part of YoungArts Week, the 2011 Finalists were taught by an impressive group of master teachers, including Branford Marsalis, Liv Ullmann, Pascal Rioult, Barry Frydlender and Kerry Washington, 1994 YoungArts Winner in Theater.
The students were able to learn new techniques and hone their craft
through intensive sessions with these legendary teachers. YoungArts
thanks them for their generous contribution of time, energy and
commitment to our young artists.

Expect the unexpected when you hear Grace Weber for the first time. Only 22 years old, she is already making a name for herself. The New York City resident has performed before audiences at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Apollo Theater in Harlem, on The Today Show, and even on Oprah. Billboard magazine calls her an “artist to watch,” and she was recently selected as one of five finalists in Cotton’s The Fabric of My Life® Song Contest.
