Theater

Theater has two categories, but you ONLY may apply in ONE category:

Musical Theater Or Spoken Theater

Requirements

Requirements vary for each category. Please review the specific requirements for your discipline carefully before applying to the YoungArts program.

Submission Upload Procedures

Before you can upload any of your submission materials, you must first complete the entire application. Once your main application form is complete, you will be sent, via email, a submission upload link. You will submit your materials to this link, as well as a mandatory Theater Submission Form. In this email, you also will receive your unique YoungArts ID number. You will use this ID number on your submission materials. Please do not share your ID number or your link with anyone.

Your work will be evaluated on its merit alone in a blind adjudication process. Therefore, do not put your name or any identifying information anywhere in or on your submission materials.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Actors should give evidence, through their performance, of an understanding of the character in the context of the plays from which they are taken.
  • Actors should illustrate a grasp of language, character and the event being dramatized. Theatrical presence in combination with style and honesty of performance is central to the evaluation.
  • Actor should demonstrate concentration, control of material, flexibility and versatility of voice, movement and expression.
  • Vocal and physical phrasing and articulation will also be evaluated.

What Panelists Look For

“The panel is moved by performers with a strong, original presence who demonstrates a love of language, character and interpretation.”

“Choose material that reveals an essential part of you. Be passionate, committed and surprising.”

Please note that the application fee is non-refundable even in the case of injury. You also must be free of injury to participate in YoungArts Week if you are chosen as a Finalist.
