Open Call

On Saturday, May 15 we celebrated the kick-off of YoungArts Miami, with an Open Call event at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The day welcomed high school juniors, their parents, teachers from Miami-Dade schools and other special guests. Everyone enjoyed a performance by amazing YoungArts alumni, as well as a dialogue with YoungArts President & CEO and alumni about what it takes to achieve excellence in the arts, what YoungArts Miami has planned, and what’s in it for you! We enjoyed meeting all the talented young artists from around Miami, who are now part of the YoungArts family! Watch "Kick Off YoungArts Miami" video. Spotlight Workshop with Raúl Esparza: Approaching Broadway

On Tuesday, July 13, the first of our “Spotlight Workshops” took place at the Adrienne Arsht Arsht Center for the Performing Arts– Peacock Education Center in the Knight Concert Hall with Raúl Esparza.  Students spent 2 hours with Mr. Esparza learning about musical theater performance skills for analyzing and preparing a song to maximize its dramatic impact.  The participants each got personal feedback from Mr. Esparza which transformed their performances right in front of our eyes.  It was a great way to start off the Spotlight Workshop series which will feature discipline specific work in smaller groups with nationally and internationally know stars. Watch "Spotlight Workshop with Raúl Esparza" video. See Photo Album "Spotlight Workshop with Raúl Esparza."

A 1988 YoungArts alumnus in theater and 2009 recipient of the YoungArts Alumni Award, Esparza is a local treasure who went on to become an award-winning Broadway, television and film actor. He is a four-time Tony Award nominee, making him only the second actor to have been nominated in all four male categories. His Broadway credits include Speed the Plow;  The Homecoming (Tony nomination; Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble), Company (2007 Tony nomination; Drama Desk, Outer Critics’ Circle Awards), Taboo (Tony nomination; Drama Desk Award, Best Featured Actor), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Cabaret, and The Rocky Horror Show (Theatre World Award). Esparza had a reoccurring role on the television show Pushing Daises and has appeared in the hit NBC drama Law & Order, and as Abel Plenkov in the Wes Craven film My Soul to Take.

Alexander Technique Master Class with Dr. Meade Andrews (July 24 and 25)

Over 100 years ago, a young and successful actor named F.M. Alexander developed chronic laryngitis. He subsequently discovered and created a unique approach to releasing excess tension in his body, which allowed his voice to return and his art to flourish. The Alexander Technique is now world-renowned, and is studied and used in training and performance by artists in all media throughout the world.

In this workshop, students explored that process of "waking up" to ourselves. Through group movement explorations in relation to Alexander Technique, students connected more deeply with your essential self, becoming more alive to the creative impulse that ignites every art form. Watch "YoungArts Miami Workshop: Alexander Technique" video. See Photo Album "The Alexander Technique Workshop."

Master Class with Jennifer Armas (June 27 and June 28)

In this workshop, students discovered what art can be created in both solo and group work as they mixed and matched our creative crafts: music, theatre, writing, dance/movement, and fine arts. This is an opportunity to work on technique while breaking down conceptions of live art and community. Watch "A Master Class with Jennifer Armas" video. See Photo Album "Master Class with Jennifer Armas."
